Java Citronella oil has a fresh, sweet, slightly woody aroma that is attributed to the citronellal and geraniol components. It’s most commonly used as a natural fragrant oil in insect repellents. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies citronella to be a biopesticide, which means it is a natural “nontoxic mode of action” against potentially harmful insects like mosquitoes.
It is also used in beauty, household, and perfume products. Scientific research has found that pure citronella oil is known to have amazing antibacterial and antifungal abilities. It has been used in China, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka for centuries to help decrease rashes, infections, inflammation, pain, and other health conditions.
