Just Say No Deet to Pests

Just Say No Deet to Pests

Posted by Blue Ridge Botanicals on Jun 1st 2019

I'm done with bugs. It's already hot and miserable enough without these buzzing, biting, blood sucking pests everywhere you turn. Some days, bugs are the tipping point on my sanity barometer. I understand that they are critical to life's natural cycle and, indeed, humans could not exist without them, but I don't want them in my shorts, okay? I don't want them anywhere on my body. I have been known to strip in public because a spider crawled down my blouse. Not a proud moment.

So, let's cut to the chase...what to do about it. I, like many people, try to withhold using full-out chemical warfare unless absolutely necessary, (South Georgia pine forests come to mind). There are risks involved with the use/overuse of many bug sprays so I have tried something different this year called, No Deet, which happens to be our featured product this month along with our Lavender Roll-On. Most of the home remedies and natural products I tried before didn't work or seemed to attract them even more. No Deet, however, has been different. Seriously!

Insects may buzz by to say hello, but they don't stay for the party. It seems that they don't like catnip and/or Nootka, which are two of the dominant oils in No Deet. Catnip is a member of the mint family and contains a chemical called nepetalactone which repels insects such as mosquitos, flies, deer ticks, and roaches. I can personally testify that those nasty little biting gnats coming out now do not like it. As for the Nootka, check out this interview with a CDC scientist and what a remarkable bug repellant it actually is:

(The chemical in Nootka is also in grapefruit, hence the "essence of grapefruit" in the above).

Our No Deet roll-on, along with our Lavender Roll-On are perfect companions in your backpack or pocket when venturing out into the great outdoors. Lavender Oil is such a soothing balm for all kinds of things. It works well to calm itching, relieve the pain of bee stings, and a host of other skin irritations. Plus, the roll-on applicators are the best! You don't breathe in the mist of a spray or it isn't carried off in the wind. Lavender's my favorite herb, anyway. It'll make a Happy Camper out of anyone.

As always, we stand behind our products. Visit our website or call us with any questions that you may have.
